Here is a real rarity – both a players and a collector’s sax. A stunning, beautifully engraved, silver-plated Dolnet Alto with great art deco styling. Dolnet was a French instrument maker who started production of saxophones in 1888. A relatively small company that only produced around 500 saxophones per year – they rivalled Selmer for many years but were eventually bought out by Selmer. The Dolnets have a sound all of their own with a lovely dark, warm tone. This one has very good intonation and a lovely flexibility to the core sound. These saxes are becoming more and more popular and are up there with the best Selmers for sound and playability.
We feel they are highly underrated, probably as not many where made and they are now difficult to source, but what a joy they are to play. This is a fantastic example (right down to the amber rollers!) and a great blower. Superb saxophone history, superb saxophone – what more could you want?
