Selmer 1934 Radio Improved Alto

We are grateful to our friend Douglas Pipher, the acknowledged expert on Selmer history, for the following detail about this great saxophone:

‘Selmer 20049 is a UK-market Radio Improved Alto which shipped from Selmer Paris in Dec 1934. It left France without silver plate or setup. The extended low Bb key was added in France and appears to have been a standard addition for UK-market Selmers. The oval G# key appears to be a modification which was done in London. At one point I thought that this key was an aftermarket mod, but I have seen so many of them from this time period that I am coming to the conclusion that Selmer London may have made this change. The Silver plate was done in London.

Worldwide Alto production of the Radio Imrproved Alto was just over 1100, of which about 320 were shipped to Selmer London, for sale in England and throughout the British Commonwealth (with the exception of Canada, which was distributed through Selmer US)’
